UX Content Design for Melanin Village

Scope of Work

Melanin Village provides community, educational resources, and professional development serving over 500 families and 1,000 children nationwide. The organization wanted to design a mobile app that engages and serves their growing community, offering event registration, video resources, blog content, and community engagement features.

I was brought on to craft UX copy to build a cross-platform mobile application that acts as an all-inclusive resource hub and entry point to The Melanin Village: a homeschooling community.

  • Create UX copy for user flows in Figma and deliver hi-fi wireframes

  • Write clear and concise UX copy in adherence to brand voice and tone guidelines, the client’s feedback, and feasibility recommendations of the build partner, Singular

  • Create and maintain information architecture, editorial strategy, and content guidelines for style, tone, and voice to ensure content is consistent across all platforms

The Challenge The Melanin Village community needed a digital hub that reflected its values of education, empowerment, and connection.

Foundational user research and lo-fidelity wireframes were established, but the product lacked a cohesive strategy, consistent voice, and accessible microcopy.

Objectives

  • Develop a unified voice and tone that resonated with the Melanin Village community

  • Write clear, inclusive, and engaging copy to enhance usability

  • Align the app’s content with accessibility standards and SEO best practices

Process
1. Discovery

I began by reviewing user research findings, personas, and journey maps from the team of UX researchers to identify key user pain points around content comprehension and navigation clarity.

2. Content Strategy

I then helped develop the content style guide for brand voice and tone guidelines to ensure all copy reflected clarity and the inviting, communal brand voice. This included a content framework for consistent messaging across CTAs, buttons, an in-app notifications and tooltips. I also drafted metadata to ensure accessibility.

3.Writing and Iteration

I wrote copy for the onboarding, event registration, and security user flows. Crafting 20+ high fidelity wireframes.

4. Cross-functional Collaboration

Our team partnered with developers and designers to ensure copy feasibility and alignment with the build partners’ integration constraints. We also documented content updates and rationale in Notion for future sprints.

Results

Our final deliverables included:

  • 60+ high fidelity wireframes across core user flows

  • A comprehensive content style guide outlining voice, tone, terminology, and formatting rules

We delivered a user-centered content experience that reinforced trust, empowerment, and inclusivity, allowing Melanin Village community members to feel seen, supported, and guided through every step of the app.

Impact

  • Saved client $20,000+

  • Enhanced clarity and usability of key flows, including event registration, resource discovery, and community groups

  • Established brand voice consistency across mobile app

  • Created scalable content guidelines to support future app iterations and community expansion
